Our Social Action & Justice Committee works hard to create and sustain a more just and equitable world. Committee efforts begin with studying an issue, which may lead to advocacy by working with grassroots community organizations, government, interfaith, and community groups. The Social Action & Justice Committee provides a focal point for these efforts. Individuals take the lead on specific social justice issues. Examples of  these issues include:

  • Economic Equality

  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning Justice

  • Immigrant Rights

  • Racial Justice

  • Environmental Justice

  • Voting Rights

UUCR is actively involved in social action work throughout our community, with representatives on the boards of Cornerstones, a local non-profit that provides support and advocacy to those in need, and The Closet, a local faith-based non-profit thrift shop. We also organize or support the following initiatives:

  • UUCR Alternative Gift Market

  • Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Helping Hungry Kids

  • Hypothermia Prevention

  • Monthly special collections to benefit various charities and humanitarian groups

Special Collection for March: Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund

Established at UUCR in 1990, the Fund was set up to help support continuing education (college, community college, or trade school) for graduating seniors from Herndon and South Lakes High Schools – particularly students who have overcome adversity (financial, language, family situation, etc.).

This year is the 36th year the Fund, supported by UUCR and four other local congregations, has generated scholarships.   In May, 2024, the Fund divided $11,350 among seven high school seniors, five from Herndon H.S. and two from South Lakes H.S..
