Our Social Action & Justice Committee works hard to create and sustain a more just and equitable world. Committee efforts begin with studying an issue, which may lead to advocacy by working with grassroots community organizations, government, interfaith, and community groups. The Social Action & Justice Committee provides a focal point for these efforts. Individuals take the lead on specific social justice issues. Examples of these issues include:
Economic Equality
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning Justice
Immigrant Rights
Racial Justice
Environmental Justice
Voting Rights
UUCR is actively involved in social action work throughout our community, with representatives on the boards of Cornerstones, a local non-profit that provides support and advocacy to those in need, and The Closet, a local faith-based non-profit thrift shop. We also organize or support the following initiatives:
UUCR Alternative Gift Market
Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund
Helping Hungry Kids
Hypothermia Prevention
Monthly special collections to benefit various charities and humanitarian groups

Special Collection for Oct: Shelter House
Shelter House is a community-based, non-profit organization serving families experiencing homelessness and victims of domestic violence in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. It was formed in 1981, when several ecumenical groups came together to better serve Fairfax County's low-income population. In 1985, Shelter House's facility was moved to its current location in Falls Church. In 2007, Shelter House was awarded Fairfax County's contract to operate the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax. In 2010, Shelter House became the first non-profit to operate Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24 hour Domestic Violence Shelter. They recently merged with Family Pass so that they can now also provide long-term case management for those at risk of homelessness.
