RAINBOW FLAG TO BE REINSTALLED AT RESTON CHURCH ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 10

(Reston, Virginia, July 8, 2019) — The Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston (UUCR) will reinstall its rainbow flag in a ceremony on Wednesday, July 10 at 6:30pm. The short ceremony will include a blessing of the flag. The new flag will replace the one that was recently removed by vandals and will be installed in the same location outside UUCR at the top of a hill on Wiehle Avenue.

“We will replace every flag stolen even if it means putting up a new flag each month.  We are a welcoming faith community and we want everyone who drives by our church in Reston to know that all people - gay, straight, pansexual, bisexual, transgender - are welcome here. Our faith celebrates that sexual and gender diversity is a blessing, and our flag is a symbol of that commitment,” said Rev. Dr. Debra W. Haffner.

UUCR has the only freestanding rainbow flag in Reston that flies year-round. It has been in place since 2017 without incident until this spring. The 11-foot rainbow flag was removed on June 11, 2019, one week after the church co-sponsored Reston Pride. This was the third time the flag was removed from the property in as many months.
